Review by A2 Magazine: Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE®

3In March this year, Obagi launched in South Africa. This was big news for South Africans because this #1 skin care system in the USA has been blowing consumers away for years and now it’s South Africa’s turn to experience the Obagi system!

You can click here to read more about the Obagi launch.

Let’s get into my review and thoughts:

What did I review?

The Obagi Blue Peel RADIANCE®:

This is a quick and easy salicylic acid-based facial chemical peel for all skin types that exfoliates and helps improve overall complexion.

  • Instant, radiant results for most skin types
    • Improves a range of skin concerns, including photodamage, and results in an overall improvement in texture and tone.
    • May be beneficial if you have darker skin with pigmentary changes.
    • Superficial exfoliation, with little to no downtime.
  • Provides instant radiance—tighter, smoother, brighter-looking skin after just one use.

What you need to know is that there’re two aspects to Obagi:

  • The professional peels you can have in selected medi-spas, clinics and doctors rooms
    1. The Blue Peel (deep)
    2. The Blue Peel RADIANCE (light to medium)
  • Their skin care system (for home use), however this system can’t be picked off just any normal shelf. Your doctor or aesthetic therapist needs to assess your skin and ensure you are educated about the system and how to use it. Obagi is a medical skin care system that gets results and as such requires monitoring.

Where was it?

As I mentioned above, the Obagi brand of skincare and professional peels is brand spanking new in South Africa having only launched in the last two months. When I reviewed the peel (a few weeks ago) it was so new that I couldn’t have it done at a spa/clinic/doctor. An Obagi Rep came to my house and performed the peel.

What was my experience?

Up until a few months ago I had never had a peel before. Now that we’ve been running A2 Magazine for nearly a year now, (I cant even fathom that it’s been a year!?) I’ve had around six peels. I started off with a very light superficial peel and have slowly built up my skin strength over the last few months.

In terms of my Radiance peel experience, it was all fairly standard. All peels require cleansing beforehand and feel “burny” to some degree as they get to work, but with the help of a fan the sensation is bearable, followed by moisturising and applying a very high SPF .

Processed with Moldiv

Top: Professional Blue Radiance Peel Pack. Bottom Left: the peel getting to work on my skin. The colour is clear. Bottom Right: My skin a few hours after the peel feeling and looking radiant.

What did I think?

This is a treatment and skin care system I would definitely like to continue using.

What did I like about it?

I liked the fact that my skin looked radiant immediately after having the peel. I also didn’t have a very strong version of the peel (only two layers were applied) which means less skin shedding and social downtime.

This was the extent of my peeling (on day 3):

44

Who is it for?

Ideal if you have:

  • Age spots
  • Rough skin
  • Erythema (redness)
  • Sallowness (yellowish complexion)
  • Hyperpigmentation (discolouration)

What does it cost?

This completely depends on the clinic or Doctor you go to for your peel. The Radiance Peel could start from R600.

Anything else I should know?

Yes,

  • A series of 4 to 6 peels provides best overall results.
  • As always, stay out of the sun as much as possible and wear sunscreen after every peel you ever have. You will be sorry if you don’t. Your skin is healing and sun exposure could cause hyperpigmentation.
  • Also, I probably don’t need to say this, but just in case… never ever have a peel done by someone who is not trained. Even though peels are a non-invasive treatment, they have active ingredients that could have very bad effects on your skin if not performed by a trained professional.

Where can you get it?

Review by A2 Magazine: Classic Collagen Facial at The Centre of Wellness

$

Screen Shot 2015-05-13 at 10.20.40What did I review?

Classic Collagen Facial using QMS products and a superficial Neostrata Peel.

After having this treatment it is claimed that there is a visible improvement in skin tone and structure.

Where was it?

The Centre of Wellness, a Medical Aesthetic Clinic which offers treatments that are medical-grade and are performed by or under the supervision of Dr Melanie Lambrechts.

What was my experience?

Steps involved in the 90 minute facial are a Deep Cleansing, Peeling using Exfoliant Fluid or Neostrata Glycolic (exclusive to the Centre of Wellness – they have tailored this facial to make it their own), Algae mask, Freshening Tonic, Collagen, Co-Lectine 3,  QMS Hydro Foam Mask or Relax O Firm mask and finally the sealing of the facial with a QMS Moisturiser.

As you can tell, it’s an involved treatment and can take up to 2 hours to be complete.

I’m doing something slightly different with my pictures for this review. I’ve discovered making slideshows on my Mac and am now basically a movie producer. See the video below… it does have music, so if you’re sitting in an open office, plug your earphones in now:

(It may take a while to buffer, but bear with it. The pictures are worth it. Promise.)

Treatment

Normal collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed into the skin. Dr Schulte (of QMS) found a way to break the collagen molecule into 3 amino acids that join up again once in the skin to form a complete collagen molecule. This molecule then absorbs moisture to increase its size 360x – thus giving the skin a wonderful plumped up look.

The facial is used to revitalise and regenerate stressed and damaged skin using microsurgical procedures. It gently nurtures and revitalises dysfunctional skin while stabilising its functions.

Procedure

  • Skin is cleansed twice with gentle cleanser.
  • 20% Neostrata peel is applied as the exfoliation which is ideal for all skin types.
  • This is applied to the face, neck and chest and around the eyes right close to the eyelids as this area is neglected and needs to be exfoliated so that collagen can penetrate. The peel gently loosens the intercellular glue so that cells naturally slough away without been rubbed with granules like a sandpaper effect. There is no downtime or peeling with this afterwards.
  • A Cold Alginate Mask is applied to the entire face.
  • This mask sets as a rubberised mask that is lifted off and then analysed – showing the dry areas that need attention and collagen.
  • Collagen is then applied to skin – Med day protection was used for me as it contains highly effective ingredients to soothe inflammations and regulate the balance of sebum and moisture production, especially against environmental damages.
  • An additional mask is then applied after the alginate for 15 minutes to nourish, hydrate and soothe. This mask is then removed.
  • Finally, extra moisturiser and serum is applied (24h), Sport Active applied on top of this  (a tinted moisturiser with SPF 15 that is divine), and more for the neck and chest area (this also contains collagens).

What did I think?

A long but incredibly worthwhile treatment.

What did I like about it?

My glowing skin straight after the treatment.

I also like that all their facials are characterised as bespoke. They customise them to each individual client needs. For example – the original QMS Collagen Facial does not include a Neostrata peel –  this is something they added on their own and have been getting great results.

Anything I didn’t like?

Having the mousse mask over your face can feel a bit claustrophobic.

Who is it for?

Any age group of all skin types, especially tired, dull, dehydrated skins.

What does it cost?

If you want the facial only, the cost is R880.

But, if you want what I had, the facial and the peel then the cost would be R1 050.

Where can you get it?

Get in touch with The Centre of Wellness – all their details are below.

Anything else you should know?

Yes,

  • Every patient gets a free Visia scan prior to their first treatment – Visia assesses your skin, identifies problem areas and allows the therapist to prescribe the best possible products and treatments for your problem areas.
  • The Centre of Wellness offers a range of other treatments too:

Review by A2 Magazine: Laser Treatment for Jaw Clenching & Teeth Grinding at Thandar Inc

14For as long as I can remember I’ve been clenching and grinding my teeth. Over the last two years, I’ve sought treatment in terms of Botulinum Toxin injections in my jaw (this helps a lot!) and sleeping with a bite plate. Both have reduced my facial pain substantially, however I do believe completely in combination treatments for the best possible results which is why I was ecstatic to be one of the first patients to try out laser treatments for clenching and grinding …

What did I review?

Laser treatments for TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder which encompasses grinding teeth, clenching and aching of the jaw, headaches, shoulder and neck pain) and tooth sensitivity using the Diode Epic 10 Laser made by Biolase.

Diode Epic 10 Laser made by Biolase

Diode Epic 10 Laser made by Biolase

Where was it?

Thandar Inc Aesthetic and General Dental Clinic in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Dr Maryam Dawjee, one of the cosmetic dentists at Thandar Inc performed my treatments.

What was my experience?

Even though I’ve experienced a number of laser treatments on my body, I was nervous because I’ve never had a laser so close to my face or in my mouth before. I had no idea what it would feel like, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover it merely felt warm over my face.

My treatments were two-part:

  • Laser treatment along my jawline for the TMJ – six treatments in total. Once a week for six weeks.
  • And a laser treatment inside the mouth along my gum line for tooth sensitivity – I had three treatments spaced over six weeks. It’s important not to overdo the tooth sensitivity treatments to avoid adverse effects. If improvement is felt, then only only top up treatments over a few months are needed.

What did I think?

After the TMJ treatment, I felt a strange sensation in my jaw, you almost “feel” your muscle. It’s difficult to describe, but you become aware that your muscle is there if that makes sense, but this went away after a few hours. Dr Maryam Dawjee explained this to me as “TMJ causes inflammation in the Temporomandibular joint and the muscles around the area. What the laser offers is low level laser therapy which helps to speed up the inflammatory process and makes it heal faster hence why you feel that sensation”.

What did I like about it?

  • Treatments are quick. About 12 minutes for the TMJ and three minutes for the tooth sensitivity.
  • TMJ results were relieving and incredibly complimentary to my other TMJ treatments. My headaches caused by clenching reduced as well as my neck and shoulder pain.
  • Tooth sensitivity results were instant. My tooth sensitivity was measured by spraying cold air on my teeth before and after treatment. After just 3 minutes of laser on my gums, my tooth sensitivity reduced by nearly 90%. I’m not about to go biting into any ice creams just yet, but brushing my teeth with cold water, or swooshing cool mouthwash in my mouth is no longer a painful experience.

Who is this treatment for?

  • For mild to chronic clenchers
  • Teeth grinders
  • People who suffer from headaches (caused by TMJ)
  • People who suffer from facial muscle pain
  • People who have a “tight” or painful jaw after extensive dental treatment
  • Rheumatoid arthritis in the TM joint
  • An ideal alternative for those that don’t want to or are allergic to Botulinum Toxins for TMJ treatment
  • People who suffer from tooth sensitivity

What does it cost?

  • Consultation and 1st treatmnet – R750. Thereafter, it is R550 per treatment
  • You need 5 – 6 treatments for TMJ and 3 – 5 treatments for tooth sensitivity

Anything else you should know?

  • This is a great treatment to have on it’s own or to compliment Botulinum Toxin treatments for bruxism (clenching) and using a bite plate (I use mine at night, but should probably also wear it during the day when I’m working as that’s when I catch myself clenching the most.)
  • Your results from laser treatments depend on your habits and differ from patient to patient. If you’re a chronic clencher, you may need treatment once a year or every six months.

Review by A2 Magazine: BTL Aesthetics Exilis and X-Wave Treatments – Non Invasive Fat and Cellulite Reduction

$

1I personally prefer to seek out non invasive treatments purely because there isn’t anything I want to change about my body. If there’s something that truly bothers me then I’ll explore and do research on a more invasive option, but otherwise I’m happy to see what can be done without making permanent changes to my body. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to try out two non invasive machines from BTL Aesthetics

What did I review?

  • 6X sessions of BTL EXILIS ELITE – non invasive treatments for body shaping, skin tightening and facial rejuvenation.
  • 4X sessions of BTL X-WAVE – non invasive treatments for cellulite.
BTL Aesthetics EXILIS ELITE machine.

BTL Aesthetics EXILIS ELITE machine.

I forgot to take a picture of the X-WAVE machine because sometimes I'm not so much with the brains. But here is a "professional" photo of the machine so you can see what it looks like.

I forgot to take a picture of the X-WAVE machine because sometimes I’m not so much with the brains. But here is a professional photo of the machine so you can see what it looks like.

Where was it?

This review was specifically dedicated to BTL Aesthetics machinery and I chose not to review the treatments at a clinic that offers these devices’ treatments. Instead, I reviewed my treatments with their head office in South Africa.

What was my experience?

All in all, reviewing EXILIS and X-WAVE non-invasive treatments was a good and safe experience for me.

My treatment areas were: thighs (back and front), buttocks with EXILIS and X-WAVE and under my chin with EXILIS.

EXILIS treatment on my thighs

EXILIS treatment on my thighs for skin tightening and fat reduction. PS. There’s something quite intimidating about having pictures of your thighs strewn on the internet.

X-WAVE treatment on my thighs for cellulite. It made my foot go funny in the beginning :)

X-WAVE treatment on my thighs for cellulite. It’s hard pulses on your skin and muscles (think of a jackhammer action) which gave me crazy toes in the beginning as you can see :) You do eventually get used to the sensation though.

EXILIS treatments on my chin

EXILIS treatment on my chin for skin tightening.

The skin tightening under my chin was minimal, but to be completely honest, I’m only 30 and my skin is in fairly good condition already. There’re many benefits to starting a maintenance regime while you’re still young. I lost about 3cm around my thighs and buttocks with EXILIS and had a very noticeable difference of cellulite reduction from X-WAVE. I actually went to Durban recently and frolicked on the beach in denim shorts and couldn’t quite believe the improvement of skin tightening and cellulite reduction on my legs. It completely transformed my confidence in shorts.

What did I like about it?

There a few things that I loved:

  1. BTL Aesthetics machinery (the guys who make and distribute these machines around the world) are FDA approved and are continuously undergoing new studies – meaning their machines are no risk to you and are better equipped to offer patients real results.
  2. I love that it’s a non invasive option for fat and cellulite reduction with absolutely NO downtime. You pop in for your 30 to 40 minute sessions during lunchtime, and pop back out again. No one would know you were even there. You’re basically a fat reduction ninja.
  3. Treatments are mostly comfortable.
  4. Exilis treatments can be quite “warm” but they’re completely bearable and your trained therapist will go at your pace.
  5. X-WAVE treatments feel really weird at first! But you do get used to the heavy pulsating on your skin and it actually begins to feel more massage-like if anything.
  6. As you may or may not know, I had a minimally invasive lipo procedure two years ago that left me with some undesired lumps and bumps on the sides of my thighs. I’ve sought out a number of treatments to help minimise these, and the Exilis treatments certainly helped to further reduce the size of the lumps due to the heat from Exilis penetrating deeper.

Anything I didn’t like?

The time it takes to complete treatments over a few weeks can be difficult to manage in a busy schedule but it is certainly doable if you’re dedicated to the results. Things are always crazy for us at A2 Magazine with meetings, media events and reviews happening almost daily. At first, it was super tough to work these treatments into my diary on a weekly basis but it all worked out okay.

Who is it for?

Treatments are safe for male and female adult patients who are showing signs of ageing or want to improve those problem areas where exercise and diet have plateaued. This is also an option for those who don’t need or want major surgery work done and are simply looking for aesthetic improvement.

What does it cost?

Treatments can be from R450 per session, but this completely depends on how many areas are treated and the clinic you visit.

Where can you get it?

Contact BTL Aesthetics South Africa on their details below for a list of clinics that offer these treatments.

Anything else you should know?

Yes!

  • Do NOT go on a snacking fast food take away binge because now you’re having these treatements. You will not get results and you will waste your time and money. I’ve mentioned in almost every one of my reviews – treatments are NOT a replacement for healthy nutrition and exercise. These treatments should be an ADD ON to your existing healthy lifestyle. Magic does not happen no matter what marketing messages you listen to. If you want results, they come down to you and the changes you’re willing to make in your life.
  • You must drink a little more water than usual after your treatments to help flush your system.
  • You need between two and six sessions over the course of a few weeks. Treatments are usually scheduled 7 to 14 days apart and patients have reported results as soon as a few days after.
  • Results may vary. Patients have reported visible improvements after the second treatment session but it is common to see improvements up to 6 months. For best results, it is recommended to follow the in-between treatment instructions, maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.

Review by A2 Magazine: IPL Hair Removal at Crystal Clear Aesthetic Skincare Clinic

$

2What did I review?

One IPL hair removal treatment for underarms.

Where was it?

At the Crystal Clear Aesthetic Skincare Clinic in The Parks Shopping Centre – the one in Parkwood diagonally opposite the Goodman Gallery, Johannesburg.

What was my experience?

The spa is small, cosy and very very good looking. It’s also close to my house which is always a plus. Laser or IPL hair removal treatments are always tricky to review, because different clinics use different brands of laser or IPL machines – some machines give great results and some machines give meh results.

At Crystal Clear, they have the Yperion Technology Or-Light machine which is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and not laser – the technologies work differently. I find IPL to be a tad more uncomfortable than laser, but not serious enough to put me off.

In terms of my results, I’ve had underarm laser hair removal before (about two years ago) and my hair still grows back pretty slowly. After my IPL treatment at Crystal Clear (3 weeks ago), it grows back even MORE slowly than it did before, and my hair is certainly thinner. So all round a happy result.

What does it cost?

R600 for underarms (per session). They do offer discounts and promotions when booking multiple sessions and/or when paying upfront.

Anything else you should know?

Yep,

  • You need between 5 and 8 treatments for 99% long term hair reduction.
  • With any laser or IPL treatment, you’re required to keep that area out of direct sunlight for a few weeks (this is NB especially if you’re having treatments on your face. It’s worthwhile investing in a high SPF).
  • Click here for more info about hair removal…
  • Aside from hair removal treatments, the Or-Light Machine is also used for freckle, pigmentation, capillary, puffiness, line, wrinkle reduction and/or removal. Click here for more info about skin rejuvenation…

Crystal Clear also offer a range of other treatments including but not limited to:

  • Anti-wrinkle injectables and dermal fillers with Dr Joseph J Huskisson
  • Guinot facials
  • Dermalogica facials
  • Anti-ageing and rejuvenation facials
  • Dermaroller (Collagen Induction Therapy)
  • Glycopeel (20%, 50% 70%)
  • X-treme lashes and permanent make-up
  • Aromatherapy and hot stone massages
  • Waxing and tinting

Review by A2 Magazine: Body Sugaring at Sheer Touch Clinic in Houghton

$
0

1I have something new to share… it wasn’t meant to be a review, but I had the most brilliant experience and result with Body Sugaring at Sheer Touch Laser Hair Removal & Aesthetics Centre in Houghton that I simply cannot stop myself from sharing this uber-special treatment find.

Firstly, what is Body Sugaring, you may ask?

Sugaring is a middle-Eastern alternative to waxing that uses an all natural paste derived from ingredients including sugar, lemon & water to remove the hair follicle from the root. The brand they use at Sheer Touch is called Pevonia.

Benefits to this hair removal technique include: easy removal of residue and expedited, more thorough hair removal, and reduced growth in some instances when sugaring over time.

In my own words, it’s a very thick yellowish transparent paste at room temperature handled by the therapist. She lays it on your skin in the direction of your hair growth, and then pulls it off in the same direction as your hair growth taking lots of your hair out with it. With me? In addition to the natural ingredients, it is this “with the hair growth” application and pulling that differentiates sugaring from waxing, and is what gives the great results.

What did I experience?

I was going to Mauritius and like any female, we go for a bikini wax before a beach holiday, right? Well, I was tight for time (the day before we flew) and had always wanted to try body sugaring. One of our journalists had reviewed the treatment in A2 Magazine last year and had raved about it! I called Sheer Touch that day and they managed to squeeze me in for an appointment in the afternoon. They’re also just down the road from my house, so all the stars were aligning.

I have no pictures of my experience to share with you, for two reasons:

  1. I was there in my personal capacity and had no intention of writing a review.  Only after three weeks have I decided that this was just too fabulous not to write a review about.
  2. Even if I did have pictures, it’s not exactly the area I can show before and afters of without losing the ability to look all of you in the eyes. I had a full Hollywood – for those of you who might know, that’s one step further than a Brazilian.
This is a stock image of body surgaring that I found. Not ideal, but at least it gives you some visual idea.

This is a stock image of body sugaring on someone’s legs that I found. Not ideal, but at least it gives you some visual idea of the paste.

Was it painful?

In the spirit of transparency, it was painful but nothing that popping a Nurofen+ beforehand can’t help with.

What did I like about it?

  • The results.
  • 100% the amazing results with more thorough removal of hair experienced than with waxing.
  • I had some redness for about an hour after the treatment, but otherwise my skin is/was completely smooth with no redness.
  • No residue after sugaring.
  • No ingrown hairs.
  • No red bumps or skin irritation.
  • A long lasting treatment. Only after THREE weeks has one, or maybe three hairs have grown back. It’s quite unbelievable actually. And they’re growing back patchy and thinner.
  • The natural ingredients are such a good option.
  • It removes dead skin cells but not as harshly as waxing does, hence less redness and skin irritation.
  • I was charged the SAME price as my normal waxing place! Can you adam and eve it?? I’m jewish, and I LOVE better value at the same price.

What didn’t I like?

It takes a little longer than waxing, which can make enduring the hair removal process more harrowing. But if I can do it, then so can you. I’m a sissy.

What did it cost?

R260 for a full Hollywood (it says R240 on their price list but I don’t think this has been updated). Click here for their full price list.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone (male or female) who waxes.
  • Great option if you’re someone who’s allergic to wax ingredients.
  • An alternative for any hair removal method.

What else should you know?

Body Sugaring can be done on any part of the body.

And, because I like to cover all the bases for you, Sheer Touch offer other treatments and procedures:

  • Facial care
  • Chemical peels
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Stretch Mark, Cellulite, Varicose Veins & Fat Reduction
  • Hair removal (IPL, Laser, waxing and body sugaring)
  • Specialty facial and skin cares
  • Injectables (anti-wrinkle and fillers) with a doctor

Review by A2 Magazine: Organic Permanent Hair Colour by Organic ColourSystems®

$
0
0

2What did I review?

Organic® ColourSystems – a range of professional organic permanent hair colour.

Where was it?

At Aqua Alchemy in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Why did I review this?

I’m one of those people who live on the corner of hippie and yuppie streets which is across the road from “I’ll try anything within reason” centre.

Without getting into too much detail, I do buy a lot of organic, clean and toxin-free foods and products. It’s nearly impossible to be completely chemical free in our lifetime (unless you take yourself off the grid and we all know that’s not going to happen for me). My theory is that where possible I will eliminate the use of chemicals, but this doesn’t mean I’m averse to everything chemical. When it comes to aesthetics, I haven’t had injectables and fillers yet, but I will one day soon and it is what it is.

As I’ve mentioned on numerous occasions, our view of aesthetics at A2 Magazine is all about a well-rounded approach. Having anti-wrinkle or laser treatments may make your appearance and skin look great, but what about the gorgeous head of hair that shapes your face? Right? Right.

With this particular review, I was interested in exploring organic permanent hair colour as an option to colour my hair but also give it al natural nourishment without the harsh chemicals of your standard hair colour in salons.

So now you have some reference as to why I reviewed this organic hair colour.

What was my experience?

First things first, when it comes to hair colour, I will ONLY go to a salon with professional products and have it performed by a professional (don’t even ask about the home hair dye meltdown of 1999 which induced abundant cruel slow motion laughter. My teenage friends referred to me as “leopard lover” for weeks due to the spotted look of my hair. Sigh).

In terms of my organic systems experience, it was no different to getting a normal hair colour treatment. The only difference is that you do the stretch test (to test how strong your hair is), followed by a treatment specific to your hair problem. This treatment took 40mins before putting on the actual colour, which was nice, but it did make the experience a little longer than usual. I’m normally one of those people who like to get in and get out and move on with my day.

I of course must mention the second and most important difference of all – the ingredients. Organic ColourSystems, although still containing chemicals, uses the maximum amount of certified organic ingredients with the least amount of chemicals, thus colouring your hair as naturally as possible. You can read more about that here.

Treatment on for 40 mins

After the treatment on goes the colour for another 35 to 40 minutes. This is my bet impersonation of Mugatu (Will Ferrell's character in Zoolander)

After the treatment is washed out, on goes the colour for another 35 to 40 minutes. I also look so much like a female version of Mugatu here (Will Ferrell’s character in Zoolander) “relax, don’t do it!”

Some of the natural colours to choose from

And crazy fun colours to choose from if you like having those colour streaks in your hair

And some of the crazy fun colours (bright red, violet, orange, yellow) to choose from if you like having those colour streaks in your hair

What did I think?

I colour my hair once every four months. I always go a natural darkest brown because it’s simple, easy to maintain, closest to my natural hair colour and suits me better than any other hair colour I’ve tried.

It’s no surprise then I chose to go with an organic dark brown. My result wasn’t as dark as I would’ve liked but that’s not because of the system. My hairdresser mixed in some red to the brown to help give an extra bit of shine, which it did, but we definitely didn’t go dark enough.

Overall, the result was as if I had a normal colour at a salon. Quite impressive actually.

What did I like about it?

  • The smell. Because the product is organic, there’s no harsh ammonia smells and it’s rather pleasant.
  • The ingredients are nourishing for your hair.
  • The fade out colour was natural.
  • They have a very wide variety of colours to choose from. Starting from your natural shades up to pink, blue, green and more (if you’re into those hair colour streaks).
  • It made my hair VERY shiny.

Processed with Moldiv

Anything I didn’t like?

It didn’t last as long as my usual colour. After roughly two months I needed another colour.

Who is it for?

  • I love that it’s an alternative for women (or men) who prefer to have less chemical treatments done on their hair.
  • Safe and ideal for pregnant women.

What does it cost?

Price is on request and dependent on hair length. But you can expect it to be around the same price as normal hair colour.

Where can you get it?

Offered at Aqua Alchemy in Bryanston (where I went), Goji Spa in Cape Town, as well as stocked by other selected salons in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Use the contact details below to get a full list of stockists around the country.

Anything else you should know?

Review by A2 Magazine: Pure Signature Facial at Pure Aesthetics in Linksfield Clinic

$

1What did I review?

The Pure Signature Facial.

A combination of peel technology and collagen replacement therapy that helps to create an instant glowing and radiant complexion.  This treatment stimulates the epidermis, improves fine lines and wrinkles, as well as revitalises stressed and tired skin. The skin is left feeling smooth, firm, fresh and glowing.  The Pure Signature Facial is a perfect event preparation treatment, with no down time.

2

Where was it?

At Pure Aesthetics, which is in the same practice as plastic and reconstructive Surgeon, Dr Gabriel Doucas in Linksfield Clinic, Johannesburg.

What did I think?

I have a huge soft spot for Pure Aesthetics, not only are the owners incredibly kind, good people, but they also know their stuff in terms of getting great skin results for their clients.

The clinic is, as mentioned above, situated in Linksfield Clinic alongside Dr Gabriel Doucas’ practice. I love this because the traffic they get is from word of mouth (which is always a good indication), as well as from the patients having surgery with Dr Doucas (it’s very important to look after your skin before and after having surgery. It’s also important to understand it’s pointless having a facelift if the skin itself is not in great condition. It may look tighter and be lifted but the aesthetic appeal is lost if the skin is pigmented and dry).

Aside from all the fabulous skin care treatments they do on cosmetic surgery patients, their treatments are even more fabulous if you’re wanting to finally have those skin concerns addressed and treated by having various peels, using a great skin care regime with the option of laser treatments.

What was my experience with the treatment?

At Pure Aesthetics the focus is on getting the best possible results for you and your skin. The clinic is lovely and cosy, and the treatment overall was very relaxing.

The full Pure Signature Treatments included:

  1. Dermaceutic Milk Peel to start – this exfoliates away dead skin cells, stimulates cell regeneration, improves texture and complexion.  Helps balance the skin where stressed and provides hydration to cells.

3

  1. QMS Algae Mask to follow – cools and calms the skin as well as removing any remaining dead cells that may be present.  Preparing for optimal absorption of the Med Night Repair Collagen.

4

  1. Apply QMS Freshening Tonic to balance the pH, again allowing for optimal absorption of collagen.
  2. QMS Med Night Repair Collagen is applied to the skin.  This will feed the underlying structure, improving it and allowing for better more sustained hydration levels – as collagen is responsible for holding moisture.
  3. Next step is the QMS Activator Mask – this is a thin fleece of cotton wool soaked in Activator Fluid of which the main ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid, feeding skin structure and collagen.  A thermo-foil is then placed over the top of this mask to further improve product absorption by creating some warmth and stimulation to the skin.
  4. While this mask is on the skin (10-15min) a shoulder, neck and décolleté massage is done with the QMS Neck & More to help improve the skin quality in that area and provide relaxation.
  5. The mask is then removed and the treatment is finished off with a moisturiser to suit your skin type.  In my case, the Dermaceutic Regenceutic Recovery Cream for barrier repair and hydration was used.

5

  1. The last step is sunscreen, which is always important after ANY facial treatment to protect against UV Rays and sun damage.  As a peel treatment has been incorporated, the skin is photosensitive for about 4 days after the treatment and so applying sunscreen every day is essential! The Heliocare 360° Airgel SPF50 was used for protection against UVA UVB, all visible and infrared light rays.  In my (and Pure Aesthetics’) opinion this is one of the best sunscreens available and would recommend it for all skin types and ages.
My skin immediately after the treatment

My skin immediately after the treatment. Glowy!

What did I like about it?

My skin was glowy immediately afterward and it stuck with me for a few days. I also had no peeling whatsoever, not even one little scale.

It has now been two weeks and I am certain having this treatment once a month or even every two months would yield great long term results.

Who is it for?

This signature treatment is IDEAL for brides or anyone looking for a J.LO dewy and glowy complexion before an event. It also helps to keep your make up on longer.

Additionally, as mentioned above, it’s a great treatment to have on monthly or bi-monthly basis to further treat skin concerns (dryness, redness, pigmentation).

What does it cost?

The full treatment is R1500 and it takes about an hour.

Anything else you should know?

Yes, other treatments available at Pure Aesthetics:

  • Anti-wrinkle injectables, Dermal Fillers (Restylane), Liquid Facelift, Surgical Removal of Keloids & Revision of Scars – performed by Dr Gabriel Doucas
  • Laser therapies (eyes, lips, laser hair removal)
  • A series of medical facials
  • A variety of quality chemical peels
  • Treatments by Skin Condition, focusing on: ageing skin, dull and dehydrated skin, pigmentation, acne, scarring and redness (rosacea, broken capillaries).

Review by A2 Magazine with Dr Gabriel Doucas, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon (not for sensitive viewers)

drdoucas-logoAt the age of 18 a cyst developed on my left earlobe. It never stopped me from wearing my hair up, but it was rather unsightly and even though I “lived my life” I was to a degree self-conscious about it.

Aside from having the cyst removed for aesthetic value, it was a hard ball in my earlobe that felt uncomfortable and overall shouldn’t have been there in the first place. I sought out a plastic surgeon to have said cyst removed.

Below is an account of my experience along with pictures and a video. The images and video are GRAPHIC! If you’re overly sensitive to blood, cutting and scalpels do not watch :) I’m very squeamish and even posting these were difficult. Oh the things we do for our readers…

What did I review?

A cyst removal from my earlobe.

Where was it?

11With Dr Gabriel Doucas, plastic and reconstructive surgeon situated with Pure Aesthetics Clinic in Linksfield Netcare Clinic, Johannesburg.

What was my experience?

I was nervous, but my excitement to have the cyst removed overpowered that. After arriving for my appointment, Dr Doucas and I sat down in his office to discuss the procedure, what he’ll be doing, and forewarned me of any scarring etc. We ticked all the boxes and proceeded to his in-office theatre where he does small procedures such as this, anti-wrinkle injectables, fillers and pretty much anything that’s not invasive (all of his major surgeries are performed in the hospital theatres of course).

My favourite thing about Dr Doucas is that he his a perfectionist and clean/neat freak which translates into superb results for his patients including myself. I also found his bedside manner incredibly comforting and calming.

See how my procedure unfolded in the pictures below and be sure to read the captions…

What are my final thoughts?

I am completely and utterly beyond ecstatic with the final outcome of this procedure. After the initial procedure I had two follow up appointments, one to remove the stitches and the second as a final check up. From start to finish I felt incredibly comfortable and well looked after by Dr Doucas and his team. Regarding scarring, I thought there’d be some remnant of a scar, but the stitching job was so clean that I’ve healed with no noticeable markings.

Anything else you should know?

Yes,

  • Dr Doucas is well-known for being the doctor women go to when they need to have their ‘botched’ breast surgeries fixed
  • His other cosmetic interests include:
    • Breast aesthetics
    • Facial rejuvenation (anti-wrinkle injectables, dermal fillers etc.)

More about Dr Doucas

Dr Doucas believes that a good surgeon knows when not to operate. He is both passionate and meticulous about ensuring that his patients fully understand any procedure they may be considering. He ensures that this is the case by explaining complex medical procedures and their consequences, using easy-to-understand, non-medical terminology.

Dr Doucas firmly believes that patients should be empowered to make informed decisions about prospective surgery and he therefore provides them with the requisite tools to do so. This is followed-up by comprehensive post-surgical care and consultation.

Dr Gabriel Doucas graduated from the University of the Free State with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He then went on to specialise as a Fellow of the College of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa, through the University of the Witwatersrand.

In addition to running a successful private practice from the Netcare Linksfield Hospital, he is also a founding member of Pure Aesthetics, a non-surgical aesthetic centre, which is also based in the Linksfield hospital.

Review by A2 Magazine: Vita Liberata Organic Moisturising Spray Tan

$

14What did I review?

A Vita Liberata spray tan.

Where was it?

At my house :) You can visit salons that offer the spray tan but you can also have them come to your house. Uber convenient!

What was my experience?

Beata, my spray tan technician arrived at my house complete with a spray tan tent and equipment. Within 10 mins she had the whole thing set up in my lounge with zero chance of mess getting anywhere which is something I was initially concerned about. This is what celebrities must feel like.

The usual spray tan programme went down: shave your legs the day before, exfoliate in the shower the morning of your spray tan, do not put on any creams or deodorant beforehand and get ready to get nude in front of a stranger.

Beata put protective cream on the palms of my hands and inside wrists to avoid ‘Orangutan Hands’ post spray tan. I then hopped into the tent and spray tanning commenced. The whole thing, from set up to getting dressed took about 40mins. Quick quick.

What did I think?

I’ve never had a spray tan before. I’m not sure why, but I think it may have something to do with sheer laziness. Either way, for a first time spray tan I’m super happy it was a Vita Liberata one as I’ve heard countless stories from my friends about going orange, the tan not lasting, the bad smell etc.

See how my Vita Liberata experience and results played out…

Tan developed after 8 hours

Tan developed after 8 hours. This is pretty dark but the “top coat” does wash off after your shower and you’re left with a natural looking tan.

12

Also a little bit shiny from the product still but this is because you can’t wipe or wash your face until that first shower the next day.

My impressed face

My impressed face… not only because am I enjoying the colour development but also because it doesn’t smell bad at all!

I showered the morning after the spray tan and jetted off to Durban. This is my complexion the next day... not too light, not too dark... just natural!

I showered the morning after the spray tan and jetted off to Durban. This is my complexion the next day… not too light, not too dark… just natural!

What did I like about it?

  • I didn’t go orange!
  • I didn’t smell like I had a spray tan.
  • The tan lasted properly about six days with good maintenance (no scrubbing or rubbing harshly when drying my skin after a shower).
  • The tan faded naturally without any splotchy markings (I often get the scaled splotchy look with normal home self-tanning products).
  • I had a facial peel for another review a week before the spray tan and I loved that I didn’t have to compromise on the tan (due to Vita Liberata’s natural and non-toxic ingredients, it makes it safe to use after a peel or laser treatment and is actually quite nourishing for your skin. It should be noted however that after any peel/laser treatment to just double check with your doctor/therapist when it’s okay to use other products).

Who is it for?

  • Safe to have after peels and laser treatments thanks to the clean ingredients
  • Safe for pregnant women
  • Anyone looking for a healthier spray tan alternative
  • Anyone seeking a natural looking tan

What does it cost?

R450 at home and from R320 – R400 at a salon (depending on where you go but that is the recommended retail price).

Where can you get it?

  • You can check a list of their stockists around the country here.
  • Use their contact details below to book a home spray tan (this might be in Joburg only, but you will need to ask and double check).
  • Visit their website to buy online www.vitaliberata.co.za
  • They also offer vouchers so you can gift your friends with spray tans. Perfect for birthdays, bachelorette or Christmas gifts!

Anything else you should know?

Yes, they have home self-tanning products for the body and face in various shades. They are pricey, but bear in mind these are PREMIUM products and are of premium quality which is priced accordingly. I personally don’t mind spending money on products that I know are quality, not harmful and give me what I’m looking for. In this case, a great healthy looking tan without having to spend time in the sun.

Oh and before I forget, if you’re having a spray tan before a special event then it’s always best to have it done two days before.  This allows time for the tan to settle nicely.

Also, you should definitely check out their other products – I certainly have my eye on the Face Tan collection and the Illuminating Skin Finish with SPF25!

Review by A2 Magazine: DermaPolish by DermaFix Cosmeceutical Skin Care

$

1Some skin therapists swear by granule exfoliation while others think enzymatic exfoliation is the bee’s knees. What’s the difference between the two? Simple, granule exfoliation is with little beads in a product that when rubbed on the skin remove dead skin cells. Enzymatic exfoliation can be more gentle through ingredients in the product, like fruit acid, that gently exfoliate away dead skin cells.

I recently tried my first home-use product that exfoliates the skin with it’s ingredients rather than scrubbing the skin. It’s nothing like a peel or anything close to it so don’t get confused. This product simply has ingredients in it that remove dead skin cells and revitalises the skin.

What did I review?

DermaPolish by DermaFix – a gentle daily enzymatic exfoliant for the face.

DermaFix Cosmeceutical Skin Care is a proudly South African brand and provides advanced products specialising in anti-ageing, hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring and stretch marks, embracing new proven technology as they develop.

Processed with Moldiv

What did I think?

DermaPolish comes in a powder form and when mixed with water makes a paste that you rub into your skin and wash off. I loved the smell of tea tree in the product as well as the tingly fresh feeling afterward.

2

The ingredients are filled with a blend of organic enzyme rich powders, which micro-exfoliates and cleanses the skin. DermaPolish is packed in dry form to maintain its effectiveness and freshness and water activates the enzymes together with hydroxy acids, smoothing, softening and brightening the skin, whist also lightly exfoliating dead cells away and accelerates cell renewal.

  • Licorice and papain extract lightens and brightens the skin.
  • Colloidal Oatmeal balances the pH of the skin and accelerates barrier repair.

Two options for use:

  • Decant one teaspoon of DermaPolish into the palm of the hand and activate by adding an equal amount of water. Lightly massage onto the skin’s surface, and then rinse with tepid water.
  • Mix DermaPolish with water to form a paste, apply to the skin’s surface and leave on as a brightening masque for 10—15 minutes.

I didn’t use any of their other products in the range so this review isn’t intended to be “I had fantastamagorical results” kind of review. The purpose of this review s to tell you I’ve been using the product for a few months everyday and have really enjoyed my smoother skin as a result.

What does it cost?

R260 (50g) from their online store, however, prices may vary depending on which clinic you purchase from.

FYI – I’ve been using DermaPolish since April 2015 and I still have more than half the amount of powder in the bottle… it lasts a really long time.

6

Where can you get it?

You can buy Dermafix products online from their website – www.dermafix.co.za – or you can visit one of their local stockists around the country which is normally a spa or an aesthetic clinic, contact DermaFix for a stockist near you.

Anything else you should know?

Absolutely yes! The entire DermaFix range is incredibly comprehensive and covers a wide range of skin concerns: anti-ageing, acne, scarring, stretch marks and more. Visit their website below to view the full range.

Review by A2 Magazine: DR GOBAC Biorestore Needle-Free Facial at the DR GOBAC Skin Body Apothecary

8We all know about DR. GOBAC Cosmeceuticals, right? If not, then I can’t be held responsible for you falling in love with me for introducing you to this range. I’ve previously used the DR GOBAC products at home, namely the Vitamin A serum, Biorestore serum, Night Lift and Day Cream, and loved all of them on my skin. I especially love that all their products are simple, easy to use, eco and health – friendly.

Aside from their products to use in your skin regime at home, DR GOBAC facials have always been available at Placecol salons and various other clinics and salons around the country. However, when I heard DR GOBAC was opening their very own medi-salon, The DR GOBAC Skin Body Apothecary, I knew I needed to test drive it asap.

What did I review?

The Biorestore Needle-Free Facial – an ideal anti-ageing and skin-rejuvenating facial.

Where was it?

Dr GOBAC Skin Body Apothecary in Johannesburg. Their first ever medi-salon offering a range of specialised facial, body and anti-ageing skin treatments. Read more about the Apothecary here.

What was my experience?

The apothecary itself is gorgeous, welcoming and beautifully decorated. The staff are friendly, well-trained and are always on hand to help you choose the right treatment and take-home product specific to your needs.

When it came to my Biorestore facial, the treatment was a superbly relaxing hour long and comprised of assessing my skin first, figuring out my problem areas, followed by the facial itself… and then followed by the softest, plumpiness, smoothest, glowiest skin on my face!

See some of my pics below…

Glowy skin afterward - hooray! How about that Jewish nose though. Oy vey.

Plump, smooth and glowy skin afterward – hooray! How about that Jewish nose of mine though. Oy vey.

I only had one Biorestore facial, because I review so many treatments and products for A2 Magazine at any given time, it’s difficult for me to dedicate myself to one set of treatments. However, if you’re not reviewing treatments for an aesthetic magazine, then it’s recommended to have about six facials – one per week for six weeks and you will reap the maximum anti-ageing, hydrating and plumping effects of the Biorestore Facial.

Who is it for?

Perfect for men and women in their late 20’s reaching into your 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Also makes for a uniquely special Christmas gift, or even as a bachelorette gift to give the bride’s skin a youthful glow for her big day!

What does it cost?

R880 for one Biorestore Needle-Free Facial (as at 2015. Please double check the price when booking as this may vary). And a package deal of six facials at R4500 (that works out to R750 per facial).

Where can I get it?

At the DR GOBAC Skin Body Apothecary (see address below).

Whilst there, you can also peruse and buy DR GOBAC products to use at home. Alternatively you can buy online through their website, or at your nearest Placecol Salon, plus many other salons. Check out the store locator on the website www.drgobac.com

Anything else you should know?

Aside from the Biorestore Facial, there is also the DR GOBAC Biorestore product (I mentioned this in the intro) that you can use daily at home. Rather than reinventing the wheel, below is in-depth info about Biorestore:

3Activating the ‘miracle’ work of Stem Cells DR. GOBAC® BIORESTORE is a complex compound of selected amino acids, polypeptides and potent plant extracts, which target and diminish deep wrinkles and expression lines. This hi-tech product provides unique protection to Epidermal Stem Cells, increasing stem cell longevity, limiting the formation of wrinkles and lines and stimulating growth and quality of the epidermis. Activated ‘time proteins’ retard and reverse signs of ageing while maintaining healthy physiology of the skin by eliminating toxins and free radicals. The slow releasing cocktail of antioxidants and active ingredients encourages the plaiting of new collagen and elastin strands which are beneficial for scarring, imperfections, thinning skin, dark circles and broken capillaries. The volumising, detoxing and firming properties in BIORESTORE result in a restructured, redefined and more youthful look.

Pretty cool, huh?

Dr Sujata Garach

What did I review?

A Dermapen treatment.

Where was it?

At Dr Sujata Garach, an experienced and trained GP with a special interest in Aesthetics. Read all about Dr Garach’s clinic in Laudium, Pretoria here.

What was my experience?

I’ve known Dr Garach for some time, but this is the first time I’ve actually had a treatment with the lovely doc. Dr Garach has always been a very kind, genuine and authentic person and this spills over into her work, her practice and the way she treats patients.

It was a lovely experience with a comprehensive consultation beforehand ensuring I knew everything I could possibly expect, as well as post-treatment care instructions.

Top left: Dr Garach and I. Bottom left: Treatment room. Right: the Dermapen in it’s case.

What did the treatment include?

Before arriving at the clinic I applied a numbing cream (Emla which I bought at Dischem) all over my face about 40 mins before the treatment. Something I didn’t need to do at all but did because deep down inside I’m a sissy.

You see, Dermapen falls into a skin needling treatment which can be painful should the doctor needle deeply – the only difference between skin needling with a roller and Dermapen is that a roller’s pressure and depth of needling is controlled by your therapists hand. Whereas with Dermapen the doctor is able to pre-set the depth at which the needles needle your skin. For my treatment, we didn’t needle too deeply.

Treatment protocol was as follows

  • Cleanse the skin twice
  • Alcohol swab to sanitise the skin
  • The Dermapen treatment itself is only 15 minutes
    • A serum mixture of Hyla Active (stimulates collagen synthesis), Cosmeretin (for blemishes) and Vit C 20% (for skin brightness) was applied to the skin and then Dr Garach used the Dermapen over the serum mix, essentially needling it in. The area worked on was my whole face (including above and under eyes, over nose), neck and décolleté.
  • After the 15 minutes of Dermapen, a Dermapen sheet mask was applied over my face. This brings more moisture and promotes skin calming.
  • A Dermapen vitamin rich repair serum was then applied
  • Lastly, because your skin is red and flushed post treatment, Lycogel with an SPF of 30 was applied to my face for inflammation. Lycogel is a medical foundation that offers coverage and promotes further nourishment for your skin.

Was it painful?

No, not for me. The numbing cream had worn off eventually and the Dermapen felt more like a vibration against my skin rather than painful needling.

What did I think?

I’ve heard people rave about Dermapen before and now I know exactly why they all sing it’s praise. While my skin was red straight after, the following morning, my skin was bright, radiant and smooth and definitely felt tighter.

What are the side effects?

Post treatment I experienced:

  • Redness – this went away within three to four hours (but bear in mind I have a relatively sensitive skin)
  • Hotness/tingling/burning on the skin – this was very minor. Almost felt more like a light tingling sunburn
  • Swollen – I didn’t experience this, but patients who have deep(er) needling can
  • Do not expose the treated area to the sun so as to avoid post treatment hyperpigmentation and wear a sunscreen at all times
  • Do not wash or cleanse your face until the next day, this way all the serums can continue to penetrate nicely over a few hours
  • Do not touch your face too often or even hold your phone to your ear a few hours post treatment. This is because hands/phones can be grubby and you don’t want those germs gaining access to your freshly needled face
  • For a few days after the treatment I applied a Vitamin C product by Mesoestetic, and a Neostrata Repair cream plus a Heliocare sunscreen to keep my skin nourished and protected

Who is it for?

Dermapen treats all kinds of indications on the face and body:

  • Wrinkle and fine line reduction
  • Collagen boosting, plumping and rejuvenation
  • Skin tightening around face, neck and décolleté and pretty much any part of the body (think saggy knees?)
  • Post-partum (helps to tighten saggy skin after giving birth. Ideal for women who may not require surgery but may need/want some small but significant skin tightening)
  • Pigmentation, sun spots
  • Dr Garach even needled over my eyebrows to stimulate hair growth
  • Large pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars (acne, surgical and burns)
  • Alopecia (in conjunction with a topical treatment)
  • And so much more

What does it cost?

The base treatment at Dr Garach is R1100 per treatment (includes two serums). However, the price will differ/increase based on the mixture of serums used to treat your individual skin concerns and needs.

How many treatments do I need?

Best and long term results are seen after four to six treatments. Followed by one to two maintenance treatments per year.

I only had one treatment and am SERIOUSLY considering going for at least another five.

Where can you get it?

Review by A2 Magazine: The Dr Schrammek Original Green Peel

1What did I review?

The Dr Schrammek Green Peel (Fresh Up)

Where was it?

At Lightsculpt Clinic in Bedfordview, with the treatment performed by Elisma van Schalkwyk.

Green Peel treatment at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview, Johannesburg

Green Peel treatment at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview, Johannesburg

What is The Green Peel

Think of everything you know about peels. Got it? Okay good, now forget ALL of that.

The Green Peel is not like a peel as you know chemical peels to be. The biggest difference being chemical peels peel your skin via acids in the product that lift your skin. Whereas the Green Peel’s ingredients are made up of strong medical grade herbs that work their way deep into your skin’s dermis causing a reaction that lifts imperfections from deep within without chemically “stripping” the skin.

Normal chemical peels are robotic in nature. Whereas the herbs in the Green Peel are smart and penetrate themselves into skin cells and add what they need to create the rejuvenation.

It’s important to note that all peels have their place in the aesthetics and anti-ageing world and shouldn’t compete with one another. When it comes to the Green Peel, it is amazing on its own to improve your skin quality, tone, wrinkles, health, scars, pigmentation, acne and breakouts and is also ideal when formed part of a holistic aesthetic treatment plan. For example – Green Peels are used to improve your skin, anti-wrinkle injectables to reduce wrinkles and dermal fillers to restore volume where needed etc.

What was my experience?

Pre-Green Peel

In preparation for the Green Peel, I stopped using all skin care products with active ingredients (such as Retinol, Vitamin C) for about one month prior. This is to avoid any adverse reactions.

Cleansing and prepping the skin

Cleansing and prepping the skin

During Green Peel

If you’ve had peels before it is a very weird and different experience. Elisma, my therapist, prepped my skin by cleansing twice. She then mixed the Green Peel herb mixture, brushed it onto my skin and proceeded to massage this into my skin in circular motions for a minute and a half. Whilst this is happening it doesn’t burn and isn’t painful, it feels more like sand granules being rubbed onto your skin and continues to feel like very prickly pins and needles.

The whole treatment itself is a quick 45mins including the skin consult, prepping, the actual peel is around one and a half minutes, and post care.

Applying and massaging the peel into my skin in circular motions for 1.5 minutes

Applying and massaging the peel into my skin in circular motions for 1.5 minutes

Post-Green Peel

Elisma removes the Green Peel with warm water and places on a cooling mask to calm the skin. My skin was immediately red, tingly and plumped. This is because the herbs get to work straight away and conintue to do so for up to two days. Elisma also applied the Dr Schrammek Blemish Balm and sunscreen straight after to help reduce the redness and to protect my skin throughout the day.

Skin immediately after the peel is flushed red and plumped

Skin immediately after the peel is flushed red and plumped

The redness subsided within a few hours, but the strangest feeling was the tingling of my skin for 24 hours after the peel. Every time I touched or grazed my skin with my fingers it left a path of tingles. So weird.

Skin two hours after treatment - all redness has subsided but there was still significant tingling in the skin

Skin two hours after treatment – all redness has subsided but there was still significant tingling in the skin

I experienced minimal skin tighteness the next day with very mild flaking around my dry areas (chin and nose), this was almost unnoticable so I was able to return to my daily life as usual with no downtime. With that said, the results of your Green Peel are not dependent on if you peel or not (with the Fresh Up and Energy peels), some patients may experience it and some won’t.

Skin the day after - feeling a little tight with a little tingling remaining. However no downtime results allow me to continue with daily life as normal

Skin the day after – feeling a little tight with a little tingling remaining. However, no downtime results allow me to continue with daily life as normal

I was also sent home with a homecare kit which included a post care cream and solution and a blemish balm for a week. I then applied my usual sunscreen I had at home. Using these products significantly support your skin post peel and enhance results.

What did I think?

I am completely in love with the Green Peel. Completely. I want to take it on a nice seafood dinner date and introduce it to my family. My skin felt amazing afterwards, and I’ll definitely want to have a few more.

What did I like about it?

I love that while it’s a medical grade product and brand, it actaully also happens to be natural and organic. The histroy behind the Green Peel is rather amazing:

“More than 60 years ago, Christine Schrammek provided the foundation for the original GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling Treatment which helps people with various skin problems to get a clean and even skin. The basis is a mixture of eight selected herbs containing enzymes, minerals and vitamins, which are massaged into the skin. The Herbal Peeling Treatment was further medically developed and extended by her daughter, the dermatologist Dr. med. Christine Schrammek-Drusio, and is applied today by aestheticians and doctors worldwide. Varying amounts of the herbal plant mixtures allows the GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling Treatment to be adapted to individual skin conditions and the personal treatment goals.”

Who is it for?

Ideal for men and women in their 20s to 60s looking to improve their skin health, condition and reduce scars, pigmentation, breakouts, wrinkles, rough textured skin and so much more.

The Green Peel can also be used for teenagers from 16yrs and up that struggle with acne and breakouts.

What does it cost?

At Lightsculpt Clinic the cost is from R1650 for your first Fresh up Green Peel (including your homecare kit of postcare products) as at July 2016. With your follow up treatments being from R1000. However, please do contact Lightsculpt directly (011 616 1436) for their pricing details and contact Dr Schrammek below for full pricing details at other aesthetic clinics.

How many treatments do I need?

For best results, it’s recommended to have up to five treatments with two-week intervals. Although your trained skin care therapist will advise you according to your individual needs.

Where can you get it?

I had my treatment at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview (011 616 1436). Dr Schrammek is by no means a new brand, they’ve been around for over 60 years, however, they only launched in South Africa in February this year and are still in the process of rolling out the brand in clinics around the country. Contact them below to find a clinic near you.

Anything else you should know?

Yes, a few things:

  • As with any skin treatments we recommend, if they are in the wrong hands they can cause damage. It is imperative to only visit aestheticians, doctors and clinics you know have been officially trained and are qualified to offer these treatments. Use the contact details below to find a clinic near you.
  • The original GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling Treatment is exclusively offered by certified aestheticians and doctors around South Africa.
  • There’re three levels of the Green Peel – the difference between these are not the ingredients, rather it’s the length of massage time onto the skin that creates the deeper intensity. The three levels are as follows:
  1. Fresh Up (Level 1 – gentle) – With this method, there is no peeling effect. Instead, the skin is stimulated and refreshed with natural herbs. Blood circulation is stimulated, pores open and the skin is now able to optimally absorb the ingredients of the subsequent skin care. The complexion appears brighter and fresher. GREEN PEEL® Fresh-Up vitalises the cells and your skin glows with a new freshness. This is why this treatment is the ideal problem solver for tired skin without freshness and serves as an effective prevention helper against premature ageing and loss of elasticity – even if your skin hasn’t started showing the signs of ageing yet.
  2. Energy (Level 2 – mild) – This treatment with natural herbs noticeably provides energy. It stimulates blood circulation and metabolism and thus leads to a natural improvement of the skin texture without any peeling effect. GREEN PEEL® Energy provides your skin with the natural energy it needs to renew the cells. It helps to reduce age-related skin appearances as well as impurities, scarring and pigment disorders. The treatment visibly improves the skin’s appearance and harmonises its surface. It works ideally as repeated, intensive salon treatment several times a year.
  3. Classic (Level 3 – more intense) – The success of the original GREEN PEEL® Herbal Peeling Treatment Classic for decades speaks for itself. It is the solution for various skin problems in the face and on the body. These include: large-pored, seborrheic skin, impure skin, sebum cysts, scars, skin prone to premature formation of wrinkles with sagging face contours, sun damaged skin, anti-ageing prophylaxis, some forms of hyperpigmentations, stretch marks (striae), sagging skin on the body (abdominal wall, upper arms, thighs).

Review by A2 Magazine: VelaShape III for Cellulite and Centimetre Reduction

$

5What did I review?

A VelaShape III treatment for cellulite and centimetre reduction.

What is it?

VelaShape is a non-invasive body contouring treatment for circumferential and cellulite reduction.

Treatments can be done on the neck (under chin), arms, thighs, buttocks, flank and abdomen. Most patients see gradual and cumulative results throughout the treatment regime.

VelaShape technology combines infrared light, bi-polar radio frequency energy and vacuum, which cause deep heating of the fat cells, their surrounding connective tissue and the underlying dermal collagen fibres. This type of efficient heating and vacuum stimulates the growth of new and better collagen and elastin, which results in localised reduction in skin laxity, body volume, and an overall improvement in skin structure and texture.

There is no downtime or significant discomfort during or after the treatment.

Where was it?

At “Healthy Aging: Sone-Body Contouring @Dr Gys” in Woodmead, Johannesburg (Sone does treatments within Dr Gys’ practice). You can get in touch with her for bookings on 087 802 2838 or 082 562 8004.

You can also contact Radiant Healthcare (details below) for a list of clinics and practices around South Africa that offer VelaShape III treatments.

2

What was my experience?

I’ve previously had VelaShape treatments and while the treatment is completely non-invasive and painless, the heat of it took me by surprise. However, my second time around with Sone, I found the treatment to be very pleasant. Still quite hot, but definitely manageable.

What did I think?

I only had one treatment so it’s difficult to say I had amazing results. I definitely need to go back and complete the sessions for final results. However, after even just one treatment, I did note a slight difference in my skin feeling a bit more taut.

7

Who is it for?

Men and women who are already eating well, exercising often and living healthy and are looking for an extra boost to reduce cellulite, reduce centimetres and tighten skin in a non invasive way with no pain or downtime.

What does it cost?

About R1500 per treatment, but you need to check with the practice or clinic you visit, as they will differ from place to place.

You need about four treatments spaced two weeks apart for best results.

Anything else I should know?

Yes;

  • Drink lots of water after the treatment – this helps to flush out your system of toxins released from the treatment.
  • This is not a weight loss treatment. VelaShape uses a combination of technologies to contour your body, reducing the trouble spots that diet and exercise can’t normally reach. The ideal VelaShape patient is someone with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of less than 30.

Review by A2 Magazine: Ellanse Facial Fillers

$
0
0

2In our 20s, our skin is the epitome of youth – fresh, plump and wrinkle free. This is mainly because our bodies are producing an abundance of collagen at this stage of our lives. Now for those of you who are not in the know, collagen is a protein produced by our cells that help to “hold” the skin together, keeping it looking young, firm and baby smooth. Unfortunately though, this high level of collagen production does not last as we get older. In fact, it starts to decline once we hit our 30s. And if you haven’t lead a healthy lifestyle, mid-30s is when cheeks start to lose volume, which in turn leaves our tear troughs (the area between the lower eyelid and upper cheek) looking hollow and tired.

This is exactly what happened to me. Over the last few years, I started noticing volume loss in my cheeks, with my lower eyelids slowly moving downwards (giving me an appearance similar to that of the depressed looking dog cartoon character, Droopy).

Now since I’m fortunate enough to be working in the aesthetics industry, I was well aware of the use of dermal fillers to plump and restore youthfulness to the face. So without further ado, I decided to try out a new generation of filler from Restylane, called Ellanse.

What did I review?

Ellanse Facial Fillers

1

Where was it?

My procedure was done in June 2016 at the Lightsculpt Aesthetic Clinic in Bedfordview, Johannesburg – under the hands and watchful eye of Dr Alistair McAlpine. Dr McAlpine is a dual qualified medical doctor and dentist, and is the Head of Medical Aesthetics for Lightsculpt.

For a list of other trained doctors offering Ellanse Fillers, contact Genop Healthcare under ‘Contact’ below.

Dr Alistair McAlpine at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview

Dr Alistair McAlpine at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview

What was my experience?

After a consultation and careful assessment of my problem areas, Dr McAlpine injected 1ml of Ellanse filler into my tear trough and cheekbone, as this helps to restore volume in these areas, thereby giving it their youthful fullness.

He additionally injected 50 units of botulinum toxin into my brow-line, forehead and crow’s feet (the fine lines around my eyes) to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

This combination of fillers and botulinum toxin produces highly effective results – as while fillers is all about restoring volume in the nose-to-mouth lines, the hollow temples and tear troughs – the botulinum toxin compliments this with the smoothing out of fine lines and wrinkles in other areas.

Before & After

Before & After

What did I think?

Now in order to see the immediate effects of the filler working its magic under my eyes, Dr McAlpine first injected a small amount into my left tear trough and cheek only, leaving the right side untreated. He then handed me a mirror, where he pointed out the difference between the two sides of my face.

I was incredibly impressed, as I could already see a noticeable lift and volume in the treated area. An added benefit to this treatment is that the results only improve as time goes by, as the Ellanse fillers stimulate the generation of the body’s own natural collagen for beautiful, fresh and longer-lasting results.

What did I like about it?

Compared to other range of fillers, Ellanse only requires a minimum amount of solution to be injected, where only one session is needed for the full effect of the treatment to be seen. This makes it very cost effective for patients on a tight budget (which in itself is a plus!). I also found it to be a very quick, painless procedure with no downtime, where I could go straight back to work directly after my treatment.

Who is it for?

Both men and women who are facing the dilemma of early signs of ageing are the best candidates for Ellanse fillers (particularly for those who do not wish to undergo invasive procedures for facial rejuvenation).

What does it cost?

This is entirely patient dependant – as well as what variation of Ellanse filler is required. There are four varieties of Ellanse fillers, which allow the patients to choose from different options of how long the results would last. The four varieties include Ellanse-S which lasts for one year, Ellanse-M for two years, Ellanse -L for three years and Ellanse -E for 4 years.

I had the Ellanse-S, which costs R3500 per syringe (it’s important to get quotes from your doctor as prices may vary from clinic to clinic).

Where can you get it?

I had mine done at Lightsculpt Aesthetic Clinic at their Bedfordview branch. For a list of doctors near you offering Ellanse treatments, contact Genop Healthcare below.

Anything else you should know?

Ellanse fillers are composed of Polycaprolactone, which is used just like any other dermal filler, and is administered in a syringe pre-formulated. This type of dermal filler can used to enhance different areas of the face like the temples, cheekbones, chin, ear lobes, eyes, lips and nose.

6X Venus Concept Legacy treatments for fat reduction, skin tightening and centimetre loss.

Where was it?

At Lightsculpt Aesthetic Clinic in Rosebank. View their contact details below. The Venus Legacy machine is at other clinics around South Africa – contact Venus Concept Africa below for a list of clinics near you.

What was my experience?

The treatments are completely non-invasive and are very comfortable. I’ve had other non-invasive cellulite and fat loss treatments and they’re all very much the same in terms of being painless and warm.

All treatments across all their platforms (including Venus Legacy, Venus Viva for facial resurfacing and Venus Freeze for fat loss and skin tightening) are safe on all skin types, which is a plus, because in the past, darker skin tones have previously been unable to have some non-invasive treatments.

Side view of tummy after 3X treatments (one per week). My goal was to tighten skin as opposed to fat loss. I started noticing tighter skin on my tummy area after three treatments and it got better from there

With the Rosebank Lightsculpt team :)

Who is it for?

Ideal for those who are struggling with stubborn fatty pockets (love handles, tummy pooches, batwings on arms etc) and are looking to tighten skin and reduce cellulite in a non-invasive way (meaning the treatment is purely topical, no injections, cutting etc). As always, treatments like these must be in conjunction with exercise and good nutrition. Without this, you’re not going to see much or any results.

What does it cost?

From R1000 to R1200 per area per treatment and you need between six and eight treatments once a week for best results. Prices may vary from clinic to clinic. It’s best to double check in advance.

Where can you get it?

I had my treatments at Lightsculpt Rosebank, they’re a lovely clinic near my house. You can also contact Venus Concept Africa below to find a clinic near you offering Venus Legacy treatments.

Review by A2 Magazine: Anti-Wrinkle Injections

$

About a year ago I had Botulinum Toxin injections for the first time with Dr Alistair McAlpine at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview. The goal was to achieve a natural result that made me look less tired and grumpy (goodbye resting b*tchy face).

What was done

Dr Alistair McAlpine

Dr McAlpine injected along my forehead, brows, crows feet and along the jaw (to ease my jaw clenching).

As you can see in the pictures below, my forehead wrinkles were gone when lifting my forehead, wrinkles around my eyes were reduced and my brow lifted slightly (this takes away the tired look).

My face also looks slimmer/longer from the jawline.

Overall I loved the results! The best outcome from an aesthetic treatment is when people can notice something is different but they’re not quite sure what’s making you look more relaxed.

Mapping out injection points with a white crayon

Injecting

What my skin looked like immediately after. The redness went away with an hour

Wrinkles around eyes/crows feet were reduced and the brow was lifted slightly. This all helped to “open” my eyes

Forehead wrinkles disappeared. Angry lines (between the eyes) were softened

How long until you see results

You can feel the toxin getting to work within the first two days, it feels like you’re consciously aware of muscle movement if that makes sense. After a week you can see a difference, and after two weeks the full result is in swing.

How long did it last

My results lasted about four months. You can easily have two botulinum treatments a year – a subtle result always gives more desirable outcomes. The trick with aesthetic treatments is to not “see”  a difference in your face straight away, the change should be subtle and noticeable only when before and after photos are placed alongside each other.

I once read something by Dr Steven Dayan, a plastic surgeon based in Chicago, who said:

“I can prove now that aesthetic procedures, such as injecting neurotoxin between a person’s eyebrows to open up their eyes, can make them look more attractive, creating a better self-impression in addition to improving their quality of life – they actually gain self-esteem by doing these treatments. I have proven that make-up alone can have significant impact on the first impression someone creates – perceived age can drop four to five years and the person’s self-perceived attractiveness is highly significant after applying make-up. I have also shown similar occurrences with certain skincare procedures.

The key here, however, is that the change is subconsciously recognised. In contrast, if you make a significant change to someone’s face and it becomes obvious, the unknowing observer can see that the changes were made and they are actually less attractive. So, too much make-up is unattractive; obvious plastic surgery is unattractive; breasts that are too large are unattractive – that phoniness is picked up by their observer and actually has a detrimental effect.”

The cost depends on how many units you need and where you go. My procedure specifically was around R3000.

Where

As mentioned, I had my injections done with Dr Alistair McAlpine at Lightsculpt in Bedfordview – you can view their website here: www.lightsculpt.co.za

Otherwise, many plastic surgeons, GPs in aesthetics, dermatologists and cosmetic dentists around South Africa are able to inject anti-wrinkle products, however IT IS IMPORTANT for you as the patient to ensure they’ve had the correct training to do so. Ask for their background, qualifications and photos of other patients they’ve treated. If you don’t feel comfortable then find another doctor. You have to trust your doc to get the best results.

Pain level

The needle is very small and thin and found it to be a bearable treatment with nearly no pain except some stings in sensitive areas.

Downtime

I have sensitive skin so was a bit red for the next hour, but otherwise back to my usual self.

Must know

No exercise for 24 hours, lying down or anything uber strenuous that will “move” your botulinum toxin around.

Final thoughts

All in all a highly recommended, simple, non-invasive and affordable treatment to have.

Sonette’s treatment room

What did I review?

A Milk peel on my hands using Dermaceutic products. There was an option of a Cosmo peel (a more intense peel) but I opted for the Milk one.

Where was it?

At Sonette Donker’s aesthetic salon: SkinID – situated in the Manor Medical Centre, 189 Kelvin Drive, Morningside Manor, Sandton. You can call or email her on www.skinid.co.za | +27 (0) 83 250 5111 | sonette@skinid.co.za. Sonette specialises in skin, and chemical peels for the face, body and hands.

How does it feel on the skin?

No pain at all. A rather mild tingle… nothing unusual for a superficial peel.

How long did it take?

30mins including a consultation with Sonette to assess which peel would suit me and my lifestyle better, plus taking a closer look at the skin on my hands to see what my problem areas were. I had some dryness and sun spots that I wanted to address.

The first few mins we had our skin assessment. Sonette then cleanses and preps the skin. The peel is only on for 10mins, followed by peel removal, moisturiser and sunscreen application.

Was there downtime?

No, not with a Milk Peel. You would however experience some “downtime” from a Cosmo Peel (a more intense peel) in terms of skin flaking on your hands for five to 10 days.

My skin only felt a little dry for a few days, but improved with extra moisturiser. My texture improved and after a week my skin felt more hydrated and glowy. I only had one treatment, but I’d see better results with a second, third and fourth treatment.

Cleansing the skin

Applying the peel

When do you see results?

With a Milk peel you can expect to see results after two to four treatments. After a Cosmo peel you can expect to see results after one treatment.

My skin immediately after the peel. Sonette applied K-Ceutic, a stunning post treatment cream from Dermaceutic

Who is it for?

Men and women in their 20’s to 60’s to maintain youthful looking hands and looking to treat pigmentation, sun spots, wrinkled skin, irregular texture and dull grey and dry skin. It’s also a nice-to-have treatment before an event.

What does it cost?

A Milk peel on the hands could cost from R680 per treatment (as at 2017). You’d need two to four treatments spaced three weeks apart. Alternatively, you can have one Cosmo Peel (a more intense peel) one to three times a year instead (price available from Sonette).

Where can you get it?

At Sonette Donker’s aesthetic salon: SkinID – situated in the Manor Medical Centre, 189 Kelvin Drive, Morningside Manor, Sandton. You can call or email her on www.skinid.co.za | +27 (0) 83 250 5111 | sonette@skinid.co.za. Sonette specialises in skin, and chemical peels for the face, body and hands.

Anything else you should know?

  • After any chemical peel, it’s important to wear sunscreen on the area. Your skin is sensitive post-peel and has a higher chance of pigmentation without adequate protection.
  • Peels are best done in winter.
